From Here To There And Back Again! ! ! ! ! !

SHIP'S LOG:

Well, that was fun! Russ and I took a little jaunt which lasted several days, from last Friday until last night, during which we actually traveled 1,200+. Sadly though, it was in a car and not by boat. The  again, it would have been a little chilly considering where we went. We journeyed from New London to Cooperstown, NY, to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame which Russ had never seen. From there we traveled to the Gettysburg National Civil War Battlefield which Russ had never seen. From there to the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Bailey Seton in Emmettsburg, MD, which Russ had never seen. From there to the Manassas Battlefield in Manassas, VA, which Russ had never seen. From there into Washington, DC, which Russ had seen once a long, long time ago. From there we journeyed to Philadelphia, which again Russ had visited by years and years ago but not recently, and from thence back to New London. Like I said, a tough trip by boat and cold as well.

One of the many things we discovered on the trip is that if you are traveling to tourist attractions at least north of Washington, DC,  this is the time of year to go. No lines anywhere and the motels stumble over each other to give you deals. Off season really means off season. In Washington, we spent most of the day going through the Air & Space Museum and didn't see all of it. Doing all those museums on the Mall would probably take a month.  Sunday night, all of Washington was in frenzy as the Washington Redskins played in their first play-off game. We were out having pizza and watching the game , well, most of the first half, and the Redskins built a 14-0 lead. We went back to our motel (cheap) to watch the rest of the game only to discover that the cable system there did NOT include the channel on which the game was being shown! But we figured that, with a 14 point lead, and the Redskins looking so good on defense, there was little chance of the Seahawks coming back to make a game of it.  Getting breakfast the next morning, we were greet with depressed, and I mean seriously depressed Redskins' fans trying to deal with a monumental collapse the night before. Being from New England, we know all about monumental collapses so we offered what consolation we could.

More later.

traveling Again@!

SHIP'S LOG:

Well, that didn't take long. It is January 3rd and already I have screwed the New Year's Resolution that I had made . . .  and it wasn't the one about the asparagus either.

Well, I'll chalk it up to the fact that Russ and I are off on a trip or will be tomorrow.  we are head to Cooperstown, to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Russ has never been there. Consider it a black mark in his education to soon be corrected, though his idea of traveling through Upper Central New York State in the dead of winter doesn't strike me as a particularly wise idea.

Of course, after touring the wilds of Cooperstown, we shall head south . . .but only so far as Gettysburg where another black hole in Russ' cultural/educational/historical/travel experiencing shall be filled.  Where we shall go after that, I have no idea even though I have been designated as navigator. In any event, i shall not be lugging my computer with me and so shall once again be out of touch. Full details are promised upon my return.

HaPpY NeW YeAr ! ! ! ! !

SHIP'S LOG:

I once again continued my New Year's Eve Tradition of being in bed and fast asleep when the clock struck 12 in this locale. I suppose it is just another sign that I am getting "older" as I have lost any interest in "ringin' "in the New Year," at least where i happened to be at the moment. I did ring it in along with the people in London, England, while having dinner in New London, Connecticut, champagne and all. I did however pass on the funny hat and the confetti.

As for resolutions, I only have four:

1.) I will make a better effort at keeping the "Log of ABISHAG" Blog more up to date. It is a bit    difficult to keep a sailing/cruising/travel blog going when the primary mode of transportation and the namesake of said blog is high and dry under a foot of snow in Portland.

2.) I will avoid eating asparagus. This is an easy resolution to keep as I hate asparagus.

3.) I will make every effort to winner the Publishers-Clearing-House-Sweepstakes-Win-$5,000-A-Week-for-Life. This will be rather easy to "attempt" as they email me the necessary paperwork several times a week and all I have to do is is hit the "CONTINUE" and "SUBMIT" buttons in the appropriate manner. Doesn't cost a thing, then again, I haven't won anything either. Similarly, I will not risk the price of a Power ball or Mega-Millions ticket unless the prize is over $300,000,000.

4.) I will finally hook up the water-maker on ABISHAG and find the reason why the pressure water system will not pump water. Fred seems to think there is a leak that is compromising the system and he  should know because he used to be into pumps. Then again he now works for AUTO ZONE or is it ADVANCED AUTO PARTS. I am not sure but has very little to do with pumps. Then again, Fred is a wiz at all things mechanical and is very good at figuring things out. And what is even better, he loves to do the work himself so that it goes right. You can't beat that!

It's The End Of The World! ! ! ! ! ! !

SHIP'S LOG:

I really can't believe how serious some people were taking all this talk about the world coming to an end today. Some I ran into were really working up a sweat about it. It seems a bit much. I particularly find hilarious those who took off to supposed "safe spots" where they intended to ride out the end of the world. Then again, if the world really was coming to an end, that is if it was going to be destroyed, pray what place would be a "safe spot?"

Back Online!

SHIP'S LOG:

I haven't been writing lately simply because there hasn't been all that much to write about. Yes, I am still alive and well and living somewhere other than on ABISHAG. Without ABISHAG out of the water and on the hard, the only thing that is happening in that area of concern is the slow removal of all things that need to be removed and their transportation to a dry place for a winter rest.  Not what you would call a font of interesting things to share.

Nobody wants her by the way. She has been on the market for almost as long as I have owned her but still n one wants to "take her off my hands." Not that I want to see her go necessarily but it would be helpful, from a financial perspective, if someone made an offer that I could accept. By aside from one interested party way down in Beaufort, SC, who got done in by his beloved's "Nay" vote, and one other fellow who expressed interest but who never showed up for to see, her she has been without suitors for going on six years now and I expect, until I shuffle off this mortal coil, such will be the case. I am just hoping that I will continue to have the financial wherewithal to keep her "seaworthy."

So far, at least here in God's country, the winter has been winter yet. Sure, we have had a few cold days and nights, but nothing that anyone would call "the onset of the winter season."  True, "astronomical" winter arrives on the 21st but then it might not arrive at all. After all, according to some people, the "end of the world" will arrive at the same time. Didn't see that in the Old Farmer's Almanac!  To me, winter is winter when the weather is "wintry!" If it snows in October, it's winter. So that being the case, it ain't winter yet. Thank goodness, because I hate winter!

UPDATE

SHIP'S LOG:

Well, truth be told, there isn't a lot of new going on. I went up to ABISHAG a couple of days ago to remove all of the clothes, towels and the like from her. Now I must spend a couple of days doing serious laundry.  They all have the "scent" of diesel fuel, mildew and what Fred likes to call "bilge breath." It is not bad but it is noticeable and so, it is laundry time.  One good thing is that I won't need to bring all of the stuff back come the spring. When I was traveling on the boat and living there full time, it was a necessity but not so much now. If my "cash flows" allows for i, come the spring I will also install a couple of solar powered vent to keep the air flowing through out the boat and the atmosphere nice and fresh.  The fact that Thanksgiving Day is now history and the weather this weekend is supposed to be especially cold, it is harder than ever to get up the gumption to go to the boat and strip her out. I really hate winter.

Sandy Jr.

SHIP'S LOG:

Sandy Jr. blew in and out over the last 24 hours. We got some nice gusts and a higher than usual tide, but lost no power and everything seemed to stay in place. The SNOW was a nasty surprise but what we got here vanished in a rather short time leaving only the cold behind. It did however remind me again of why I hate winter. I have never really liked it but as I get older, I like it even less.

I am going to have to get up to ABISHAG and clean her out of all the things that have to go to bed for the winter. It is one of those times that a small craft has a certain appeal. Less stuff in, less stuff out. And not only one must take the stuff out but one has to haul it to the place of storage and store it, which means hauling it out of the boat and packing the car (several times) and driving to the place of storage and emptying the car (again several times) and packing it all neatly so that come the spring you can do the reverse. And I can only put it off for so long, believe me everything is worse doing in the snow.
